Lost in Time. And Space.

The man behind the counter of the Enterprise car rental asked if I would be taking the vehicle out of the state. "Not on purpose," I replied flippantly. Who doesn't love a little foreshadowing in life?

I headed north in that Aveo, with the windows down and the radio blaring, across industrialized metal bridges and through Amish farmland, occasionally looking down at the stack of papers printed out from Mapquest before my trip. I drove for approximately three hours through the countryside and city, and that old metaphor about life being about the journey is true...though the destination was actually a necessity for work.

I never realized Pittsburgh, or Pennsylvania in general, was on my wishlist of places to visit - what a great surprise. Next time, however, I plan on being armed with a GPS. And maybe tickets to a Steeler's game. And possibly a driver - it's practically impossible to get bridge photos while negotiating traffic.

TQ: fun is mostly happening when they let me get away from that job...

Imagine the trouble one could get into in Amish farmland?

Ah - you sound like someone who can explain something I have wondered about since forever. Why do people want pictures of bridges they cross, cars the rent, hills they pass, picnic grounds at which they eat? Do you actually, years later, go thru your photos and sigh over bridges you have driven over? I never can remember what bridge it is. i certainly am bored to tears - well, more honestly bored to snide remarks - if I have to look at someone ELSE's bridges, cars, motels and so forth.

Anyway, sounds like a pleasant drive.

David: I can't explain all my/others boring photos to you, but I can tell you that I've had a fear of bridges for as long as I remember (not of the structure itself, but of having impulse control problems, driving off the bridge, then being trapped and drowning in the car). Like the people afraid of flying that are forced to board the damn planes as therapy, I white-knuckle it and snap a photo...to prove to myself I can do it.

Boring? Perhaps. But it gets MY adrenaline pumping.
